Happy Tuesday Wholetonians,
Well, September sure started out with a bang! A cat 5 hurricane that is headed straight for us, stops, turns at the last moment, and heads north. Have you ever witnessed a miracle? Well, I certainly have. To God be the glory!
Have you ever been in a situation that looked impossible…where there appeared to be no way out? If you answered yes, you probably had jangled nerves, shaky faith and a general feeling of hopelessness. Imagine the entire state of Florida, sitting on pins and needles, eyes glued to the image of a category 5 hurricane on their television…headed straight for the Florida coast!
Grocery store shelves emptied, gas station pumps depleted, highways backed up with families trying to get to safety, houses and businesses boarded up, and bustling downtown areas, virtual ghost towns. And just when it appeared that the barrage of news outlets reporting grim scenarios and ominous, “spaghetti models” were accurate…the hurricane stopped, spun in place, just long enough for a high pressure system to move in, redirect the storm and push it off the coast!
“So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.”
So, when all was said and done, the unseen hand of God spared Florida from Dorian’s destructive force…and I will never forget it. When I went outside to check on the house, I was amazed to find that my uncovered pool didn’t even have any leaves in it. People who returned home from out of state found no damage whatsoever!
Even with all of the good news, there is still a general numbness and hurt that stems from both our geographical vulnerability and concern for the beautiful Bahamian people that were not spared from Dorian’s destruction. Please keep the Bahamas in your prayers. As a native Floridian, every year when August rolls around, people here get a little nervous. This is due to it being the beginning of hurricane season. I call this malaise PTHD, (post traumatic hurricane disorder). If you have experienced as many hurricanes as I have and the exhausting preparation that takes place, you know exactly what I mean!
But my purpose for this email, dear friend, is to encourage you. You see, everyone at one time, or another…will experience a storm in their life. Maybe that storm won’t be an earthquake, hurricane, or tornado. It could be physical, emotional, or even financial. Regardless of what type of storm you encounter, you are NEVER alone…God is with us in every storm, a very present help in time of need!
Every time I have faced an impossible situation, God has always made a way where there was no way to be found. What are you facing right now? Take a moment (and a deep breath) and invite God into the midst of your storm, he alone has the power to do for you what he did for Florida… divert your storm, send it packing, and keep you from a destructive force, unharmed.
Don’t just believe in miracles, depend on them. Until next time.
Michael S. Tyrrell
